There are several different counties in southeastern Texas that are worth checking out for those that are looking to purchase property in that part of the state. In fact, Goliad County real estate shouldn’t be overlooked when exploring the area. Goliad County is a small county with a big history - it was founded in 1836 and was the sight of the first declaration of independence for the Republic of Texas, which was signed on December 20th, 1835 in Goliad. Goliad County also ended up being the location of two big battles during the Texas Revolution, including the battle of Coleto and the Battle of Goliad. These days, Goliad County has a recorded population of 7,210 according to the most recent census and consists of one city, Goliad, as well as 11 other unincorporated communities that include Fannin, Berclair and Weesatche. Goliad County’s Goliad not only has the distinction of being the third oldest municipality in the state of Texas, the city of Goliad is also the smallest town in the state to have been selected for the Main Street Program back in 1984.

Shopping and Dining

Residents looking to go out to eat in Goliad County have plenty of restaurants to choose from. The Empresario Restaurant is a great family-friendly restaurant known for their burgers and sandwiches. Not in the mood for a sandwich? Try their popular chicken fried steak instead! Another similar restaurant that serves traditional American food is the Hanging Tree Restaurant, which has all the traditional staples (burgers, sandwiches, steaks). However, their specialities include their chicken and dumplings the the chicken fried ribeye steak. Those who are more in the mood for something a bit different can enjoy authentic Mexican food at either the Agave Jalisco Restaurant or the La Bahia Restaurant & Cantina. Fancy a slice of pizza instead? Then drop by at Jorgie’s Pizzeria.

There are a number of stores located nearby Goliad County real estate where residents can go shopping as well, including the Texana Furniture Co., Hanging Tree Antiques, Eula’s Plants & More, The Council Company, Soho Goliad The Emporium of Fine Art Gifts & Antiques and more. It shouldn’t be difficult for residents to find what they need within Goliad County, especially if they are in need of antique furniture for their new homes.

Parks and Recreation

Residents looking for parks and recreation options nearby their Goliad County real estate will be pleased to know that they don’t have to look very far. The Goliad State Park is the most popular park in the county, a 187-acre park that also boasts the Mission Espiritu Santo Historic Site. Visitors can take self guided tours through the mission in order to explore the church, the living quarters and the grounds as well as learn more about its historic importance at its museum. The Goliad State Park has a number of other features as well, including a petting zoo that includes goats and rabbits - perfect for the kids. The Goliad State Park is divided by the San Antonio River, which offers visitors with the opportunity to go canoeing or fishing. Visitors can also spend the afternoon hiking through the scenic park by taking the Aranama Nature trail, which is ? mile long. The park also boasts a swimming pool that’s open in the summers and lots of picnic areas. Those who want to stay for more than just a day can camp in a number of designated spots - there are primitive campsites, developed campsites that come with RV hookups and screened shelter campsites available to rent. In addition to all of these recreational activities, the Goliad State Park also attracts a lot of bird enthusiasts due number of migrating birds often spotted in the area, from red-shouldered hawks and Swainson’s hawks to black terns and Whip-poor-wilts, just to name a few.

Just south of the Goliad State park is the Presidio La Bahia (The Presidio Nuestra Señora de Loreto de la Bahía) a National Historic Landmark which hosts numerous tours, fairs & other events. The Chapel is still in use today for mass on Sundays. Every year, a live reenactment can be seen of the Goliad Massacre, the battle of Coleto Creek and the subsequent execution of Colonel James W. Fannin and his troops. It is a must see in South Texas!


Around 66 percent of residents working in Goliad County work for private wage or salary, while 22 percent are employed by the government and roughly 11 percent are self-employed. Some of the bigger industries within Goliad County include educational, health and social services, agriculture, manufacturing and public administration. As of December, 2014, the unemployment rate was only 3 percent.

Schools, Healthcare, and Transportation

Goliad County real estate is located in the Goliad Independent School District, which consists of the Goliad High School, the Goliad Middle School, the Goliad Intermediate school and the Goliad Elementary School.

Hospitals nearby Goliad County real estate include the Goliad County Hospital as well as the Detar Hospital Navarro, which is less than 30 miles away. Both medical centers provide emergency services.

The main mode of transportation is via personal vehicle. There are numerous major highways that run through Goliad County, including U.S. Highway 59, U.S. Highway 77, State Highway 119 and State Highway 239.
