There are a lot of counties worth exploring for those looking for real estate in Texas. Buyers looking in southeast Texas should strongly consider DeWitt County real estate. DeWitt County consists of 9 communities, including cities such as Cuero and Yorktown as well as unincorporated communities such as Meyersville and Pearl City. The area now known as DeWitt County was settled hundreds of years ago by Native Americans, including the Lipan Apache and Comanche. It wasn’t until 1826 that Green DeWitt, for whom the county was named, along with 400 families began settling in the area. According to data gathered from the 2010 census, the population of DeWitt County is officially recorded as 20,097. DeWitt County is less than two hours outside of San Antonio as well as less than two hours from the coast.

Shopping and Dining

Residents looking for shopping and dining nearby their DeWitt County real estate will have no problem finding a wealth of options no matter what part of the county  they are in. Those who are looking for a spot to eat in Cuero should drop in at the Eagleford Restaurant for seafood and steak or at the La Plazita for authentic Mexican food. Looking for something closer to Yorktown? Try out Aunt Di’s Kountry Kitchen or grab a slice at Paw’s Pizza Pie. There are plenty of different types of restaurants to try out no matter where residents are within DeWitt County. Other local favorites include Main Street Kaffee Haus & Deli, Rudy’s and the Barbecue Station. Shopping options are similarly plentiful. There are a ton of locally owned stores in and around DeWitt County worth checking out. Residents in need of new clothing can visit Be, Badda Bling or Unique Boutique. Those who have recently purchased DeWitt County real estate and need some new furniture can go to the Laurent Street Antique Mall, Friends or the Antiques Art & Beer store. In addition to local stores, there are plenty of nationwide retail stores throughout the county as well, including Walmart, TJ Maxx, Kohl’s and more.

Parks and Recreation

Residents that are looking for parks and recreation options nearby their DeWitt County real estate won’t be disappointed. There are a number of beautiful parks where one can spend an afternoon picnicking or hiking as well as parks where overnight camping is available. The Goliad State Park, which is located nearby Yorktown, sits on the San Antonio River and boasts 188 acres where visitors can go camping, hiking, fishing and boating. There’s even a petting zoo there for the kids! There is also a large number of parks that residents can enjoy in Cuero, including the Cuero Municipal Park, Daule Park, Alexander Park, many of which contain playgrounds, picnic tables, basketball courts, public restrooms, fire pits and even pavilions.

During the holiday season, people flock from all over Texas to view Cuero’s Christmas in the Park, a yearly event with over 200 Christmas light installations and growing each year. It begins the Monday before Thanksgiving and lasts through New Year's Day, 6PM - 10PM in Cuero Municipal Park, right off of U.S. Hwy. 87 S. Visit Christmas in the Park on a Thursday Night in December (between 7 - 9 PM) and enjoy the lights with a free cup of hot Chocolate.

Residents living in and around Cuero also have access to the Cuero Park Municipal Golf Course, something that golf enthusiasts living in DeWitt County should be sure to check out. Residents can also take a drive out to the Gulf Coast, which is less than two hours away from DeWitt County real estate.

Living

Cuero boasts one of the biggest turkey growing industries in the country and proudly calls itself the “Turkey Capital of the World.” It even celebrates an annual Cuero Turkey Trot in which up to 20,000 turkeys parade through town. Besides Cuero’s turkey growing industry, other large industries in DeWitt County include construction, agriculture, public administration and educational services. The most common occupations held by residents of DeWitt County include production occupations (such as supervisors), farmers, farm managers, metal workers and plastic workers. The unemployment rate in DeWitt County as of December, 2014 was only 3.2 percent, which is admirable compared to the 4.6 percent state unemployment rate of that same period and the 5.5 percent national unemployment rate (last recorded in March, 2015).

Schools, Healthcare, and Transportation

DeWitt County real estate is served by six different school districts, including the Cuero Independent School District, the Meyersville Independent School District,  the Nordheim Independent School District, the Westhoff Independent School District, the Yoakum Independent School District and the Yorktown Independent School District. The largest schools in DeWitt County include the Cuero High School, Yoakum High School and Yoakum Primary School.

DeWitt County residents are served by several nearby hospitals, including the Detar Hospital Navarro and the Cuero Community Hospital. Both hospitals provide emergency services as well as a large number of other medical services.

The main mode of transportation amongst residents in DeWitt County is by car, whether driving their own personal vehicles or carpooling. There are several major highways passing through DeWitt County, including U.S. Highway 87, U.S. Highway 77, State Highway 72 and State Highway 119.
