Anyone in the search of property in Texas that’s near the gulf should strongly consider Calhoun County real estate. Calhoun County is a small area located in the middle of the Texas coast off of the Gulf of Mexico. Although settlers arrived in the area now known as Calhoun County back in the late 1600s, it didn’t become officially formed as Calhoun County until 1846 and was named after John C. Calhoun. According to the 2010 census, Calhoun County currently has a population of around 21,381. Cities located within Calhoun County include Point Comfort, Port O’Connor, Seadrift, Port Lavaca and Kamey-Six Mile.

Shopping and Dining

Residents living in Calhoun County have plenty of shopping and dining options within a short distance of Calhoun County real estate. In fact, there are some really great spots to eat throughout Calhoun County, from local Texas-style food to more exotic cuisine. For example, Cathy’s Restaurant is a great place to enjoy some fried shrimp, while one can’t go wrong ordering a steak at Texas Traditions. It should come as no surprise that there is no shortage of Mexican food or seafood either - local favorites include Barkett’s Restaurant, Josie’s Mexican Food, Shellfish Sports Bar & Grill and the Monterrey Cafe.

There are plenty of shopping opportunities to be had throughout Calhoun County as well. New residents can pick up some beautiful antique furniture at Eleanor’s or the Laurent Street Antique Mall, fishing enthusiasts can upgrade their gear at The Board House sporting goods store or Rockport Sea & Spray and anyone looking for a new read should drop in at Lori’s BookNook. There’s also the Victoria Mall, which has anchors such as Sears, Dillard’s and JC Penney as well as plenty of other retail stores where residents can find everything they need.

Parks and Recreation

Outdoor enthusiasts absolutely love Calhoun County. In fact, the area attracts thousands of people every year just for its fishing and birding opportunities. Birders and photographers flock to Calhoun County due to the fact that there are 8 different birding sites located on the Texas Birding Trail where one can find over 400 species of birds. In fact, the Matagorda Island Wildlife Management Area in Port O’Connor consists of 56,688 acres of land and is a sanctuary for migratory bird species that is managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service as well as the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. It is located on an island that does not have any modern conveniences, making it a wonderful place for those that enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, birding and even seasonal hunting.

Port O’Connor, which is an unincorporated community within Calhoun County, is especially popular amongst fishing enthusiasts. This is because Port O’Connor is right on the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The Port O’Connor Jetties makes it easy to access the Gulf, thereby making it one of the most popular fishing resorts on the coast.

Living

As of 2012, the cost of living in Calhoun County was relatively low compared to the national cost of living, with its cost of living index being rated at 80.3. The biggest industry in Calhoun County is manufacturing, although the educational, health and social service industry and the construction industry are both prominent as well. The unemployment rate in Calhoun County is only 3.9 percent, which is quite low compared to the state unemployment rate of 4.6 percent and the national unemployment rate of 5.5 percent. The unemployment rate has been trending downwards for the last couple of years as well.

Schools, Healthcare, and Transportation

Calhoun County real estate is located within the Calhoun County Independent School District, which contains four elementary schools (Port O’Connor Elementary School, Jackson-Roosevelt Elementary School, Seadrift School and Harrison-Jefferson-Madison Elementary School), two middle schools (Travis Middle School and Seadrift School) and two high schools (Calhoun High School and Hope Alternative High School). The Port O’ Connor Elementary School is a 2004 National Blue Ribbon School.

Residents living on Calhoun County real estate have several hospitals that can attend to their medical needs, including the Detar Hospital Navarro in nearby Victoria and the Memorial Medical Center in Port Lavaca. Both provide emergency medical services.

Residents have access to the Calhoun County Airport, which is located in Port Lavaca. There are also several major highways going through Calhoun County, including U.S. Highway 87, State Highway 35 and State Highway 185.
