Adopt-A-Pet: An Animal Rescure Facility in Victoria, Tx

by Mary Ann Sawyers

Shandy - 14 month dog - adopt - Victoria Texas

Meet Shandy- approximately 14 months old and the most lovable dog you will ever meet! When the employees at Adopt-A-Pet arrived at work one morning, they found the puppy tied to the front door. Shandy may have some pit bull genes in her and the shelter normally doesn’t take pit bulls or pit bull mixes, but everyone there fell in love with this new arrival.  She has an amazing personality - exceptionally friendly nature, very social, playful, and just super sweet. Shandy has been spayed, has all her shots and is microchiped.  She’s just waiting for her “family” to find and adopt her.

Adopt-A-Pet is a no-kill facility that has been saving pets for over 20 years in the Victoria County area. Their mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and find loving "fur"ever homes for homeless animals.    The animals are primarily rescued from the Victoria City/County Animal Control Facility. The Shelter provides low-cost spay & neuter services as part of an ongoing effort to reduce the number of unwanted puppies & kittens born. There is no income or residency requirement for their low-cost services.  The clinic is open 10 - 2 every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for appointments.

They always welcome visitors.  You will find the shelter at 8215 Houston Highway – not very far from the airport on the opposite side of the highway. Their telephone number is 361-575-7387.  If Shandy is not the puppy for you- take a visit to the shelter and I guarantee you will find another dog there that will steal your heart.

How To Increase Your Productivity at Work or Home

by Mary Ann Sawyers

Don't Kill Time Be Productive - Victoria Texas Real Estate Market

You know you should get plenty of sleep and exercise, make “to-do” lists and stay focused on the job to be productive during your day.  Here are some additional tips to help you increase your productivity.

• Set challenging goals.  People who set higher goals tend to produce more than those with lower expectations. To achieve those goals, however, you must set specific timelines and deadlines.

• Determine your prime time for productivity (first thing in the morning, mid-afternoon?) and plan your work schedule accordingly.

• If you’re multi-tasking and not accomplishing anything, prioritize.  Periodically ask yourself: “Am I currently making the best possible use of my time?”

• Use technology.  Too many people spend valuable work time on social media (you know who you are).  Put technology to good use by trying these websites and apps:

• www.evernote.com – Use the website or download the app that    allows you to take notes, clip articles, save emails and collaborate with others.  Choose from free or yearly subscriptions with more options.

 • Google Tasks – You have this if you use the desktop version of Gmail (click the down arrow next to Gmail in the top left corner of your screen). Sync with GTasks on your Android phone or search online for “Google Tasks iPhone setup instructions.”

• www.dropbox.com – A free site for sharing files with others and accessing the files when you’re on the road.  If you work with a team, consider Dropbox For Business (prices on the website).

• Find a mentor.  Learn what works by observing or seeking advice from someone you admire for their productivity skills.

Here's to more productivity and more stress-free time!

Where to find Live Music in Victoria, Texas

by Mary Ann Sawyers

If your taste in an evening out includes live music, Victoria Texas has much to offer, whether you prefer an evening at the symphony or a two-step around the dance floor.

When it comes to music of the high-class variety, Victoria is home to two fine institutions: The Victoria Bach Festival and the Victoria Symphony.

The Victoria Bach Festival schedules concerts at locations around the city for an intense week - long festival each summer.  Many of the events are free to the public.  Show locations include local churches, the Leo J. Welder Center, and the Victoria Fine Arts Center. Musicians from around the country flock to Victoria each summer for the festival. The Bach Festival celebrated its 40th year this past summer with Grammy award-winner Craig Hella Johnson completing his 23rd year as Artistic Director for the festival. The festival has been instrumental for putting Victoria, Texas on the national radar!

The Victoria Symphony Society offers concerts throughout the year, such as the Symphonic Spooktacular in October; and Downtown Rhythms, celebrating pop, jazz and movie favorites, in the spring.  Throughout the year, the organization brings in great performers from around the world.  The organization also regularly presents educational programs.  The 2015-2016 season will be the 42nd for the organization. The Victoria Symphony has been under the musical direction of Darryl One for the past 10 years. Mr. One is contributed for raising the artistic level of the orchestra, making it one of the best in South Texas!

If you prefer an evening with more boots than bow ties, just up the road is Schroeder Hall, the second oldest dance hall in Texas. The hall offers live music and a huge dance floor every Saturday night. Many Friday evenings you can catch a free performance on the patio- live music under the Texas stars! The atmosphere at Schroeder Hall is family friendly.

If you don’t feel like dancing, several area restaurants offer music and dinning. The PumpHouse located near the park features live musicians every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night on their outdoor patio. Sunday brunches call for live music as well.  In beautiful downtown Victoria, the Sendera Restaurant features piano night every Friday and Saturday night.  You might want to check out Greeks 205 Bar and the new Moonshine Drinkery. Moonshine Drinkery offers special events through out the year and loves to spotlight Texas Craft Beer. You can find live music there most Wednesday and Thursday nights .  Some Thursday nights are open mic nights where rising young starts hone their performing skills.

I can’t end this blog without mentioning a couple of other festivals.  The Jazz Festival in the spring and Bootfest in the fall are 2 day festivals that offer music and lots of fun downtown.

Victoria is a town that loves live music.  Jam sessions, impromptu concerts and one-night-only events spring up from time-to-time.  Just ask around, and you can easily get plugged into the local scene.
